The Collision Project Week is a central transdisciplinary hub at UdK Berlin. Students from various degree programs, as well as faculty members, collide during this week and work together on projects. The projects can be process- or product-oriented and serve to expand and challenge horizons. The idea behind the UdK Collisions is to provoke disorder and mutual infection, thus celebrating the creative potential of transdisciplinary exchange. It's about creating something new and "third."
The Collisions are a playground of imagination, a laboratory of the possible, and a platform for the improbable. They encourage trusting one's sense of desires and whims, while dealing with the immediate and the unknown.
Two professors or lecturers from different disciplines develop a common theme or format for the COLLISION, and the students engage in this experiment. At the end of the Collisions, there is a presentation of the results, where students showcase what they have been working on during the week.
The Map is not the Territory
The Collision Week at UdK Berlin, an interdisciplinary project week, took place from January 8–12, 2024, and allowed students and faculty from various disciplines to collaborate on transdisciplinary projects. Participants "collided" with one another, exchanging expertise and creating something new, a third entity. This week provided students the opportunity to push creative boundaries and explore new perspectives, under the overarching theme, "The Map is not a Territory." This concept conveys the idea that an abstract representation or depiction (the map) can never fully capture the complexity or reality of the actual object (the territory). In the context of transmediality, "The Map is not a Territory" suggests that the representation of a theme across different media or disciplines is a simplification or interpretation and may not encompass the full complexity of reality. It emphasizes the limitations and perspectives that emerge when transferring information from one medium to another. Therefore, it is essential to recognize that each artistic representation, whether in images, sounds, texts, or other media, always reflects a specific facet of reality and is not reality itself. The results of the projects were presented in a concluding exhibition, offering insights into transdisciplinary collaboration and artistic innovation.
At the start of the week, Michael Fowler and Anne Kurr introduced students to the theme of transmediality. Through group improvisations led by Dr. Lina Nikou, an improvisation dancer and cultural anthropologist, students were encouraged to connect with one another and engage with people from different disciplines. Group interviews were conducted to find a shared theme for new projects. On the second day, "Auditory Spatial Imaginaries" was the focus, presented by Prof. Dr. Salome Voegelin (UAL). Sound was emphasized as a more authentic representation of reality, sparking discussions about the perception of sound in various contexts. Voegelin took an innovative approach by highlighting that sound can represent a truer reality than traditional maps or territories. On the third day, examples of artists who transmediated images and objects into sound were presented. Students began developing their own projects based on topics discussed during Kollision Week. One group worked on integrating interviews into their projects, incorporating the acoustics of the space through a sound mapping process. The interviews addressed artistic crises, and the group planned to visually sketch the space. Another group developed a sound using profound fragments of interviews to convey emotional nuances more effectively. For this, the interviews were converted into an original sound product. A third group combined interviews on the topics of home and childhood with drawings and worked on transforming these elements into a meaningful map. In another group, interviews on the theme of "Not-being-there" were visually represented. After transcription with software, they aimed to visualize the interviews as a comprehensive map. On the following day, a short plenary session took place where students presented their project ideas and discussed progress. Later in the day, students continued working on their ideas and projects in preparation for the presentation day. The final exhibition during Kollision Week 2024 showcased fascinating projects developed within the context of transmediality and the theme The Map is not the Territory. The event provided a relaxed environment for exchange between students from different disciplines. At the Uferhallen of HZT, workshop results were presented, including "Family Collision" by, "Childhood Mapping," and "Untitled" by Antonia Döß and Lea Deutsche. Additionally, the project "Wo bist du gar nicht mehr" was presented, addressing youth and personal connections to certain places. The students presented their works in an engaging format, fostering a lively exchange with visitors from various fields of the university. Creative approaches in transmediation, personal experiences, and thematic diversity were clearly visible. In the audience's perception, the exhibition was seen as interesting, inspiring, and personal. Visitors particularly appreciated interactive elements such as the "Family Collision" project and the Transcribing Tool used to communicate and convey childhood trauma. Overall, Kollision Week was seen as stimulating and enriching for the participants.

Round-up
The Map is not the Territory

The Hybrid Plattform is a joint project platform of the Berlin University of the Arts and the Technische Universität Berlin. In the pilot project, artists, scientists and experts work together across the boundaries of the individual disciplines and universities on promising topics and issues. This results in unique projects, new networks, additional platforms and innovative approaches in teaching and research.
The Hybrid Plattform is an organizational adapter between universities and other cooperation partners. As an academic incubator, it opens up new ideas in networked research and teaching and serves as a reflexive intermediary in the coordination and moderation of transdisciplinary work. In addition, the Hybrid Platform is a communicative interface between the universities, the cultural and scientific landscape and thus contributes to the transfer to the public.
The Hybrid Plattform offers national and international networks for project partners, experts and organizations for an active exchange; as an active platform, new research fields and ideas can be presented through talks, events, retreats and symposia, as well as press communication. The Hybrid Plattform is happy to share institutional knowledge regarding cultures, organizational processes and cooperation procedures at the TU Berlin and the UdK Berlin, and it also supports the implementation of formats that promote a hybrid way of thinking in teaching and among young scientists and artists.
The Hybrid Plattform team consists of two project coordinators from the Technische Universität Berlin and the Berlin University of the Arts, who design the Hybrid Plattform program with the active support of student employees. A steering committee of representatives from both universities acts in an advisory capacity.

Her particular research interests include dimensions of social inequality and social transformation processes in the 20th and 21st centuries.
In recent years, Anne Kurr has worked as a curator, cultural mediator and in political education in Germany and abroad. In her curatorial practice, she promotes the exchange of academic and artistic positions, such as in the Goethe-Institut's international project Lockdown Lehren (2021-22), which she continues on the Hybrid Plattform.
As a cultural mediator, her expertise includes the history of German colonialism and decolonization processes, especially in the Ethnological Museum, as well as educational work critical of anti-Semitism in the context of the exhibition “Flashes of Memory. Photography in the Holocaust” in the ‘Museum of Photography’ at the international Holocaust memorial Yad Vashem. She conceptualizes and leads educational formats for the Berlin State Museums, the Berlin City Museum and the University of Konstanz, among others.
Her current teaching focus is on queer-feminist theory, feminist artistic practices and gender equality, and she works with the Neurotitan Gallery and the German Digital Women's Archive, among others.

The Hybrid Plattform was originally created as one of five fields of action of the project “Sustainable vitalization of the creative quarter on and around Campus Charlottenburg” (NAVI BC), which ran from 2008 to 2010. The focus was on the important issue of linking science and art in order to make the Charlottenburg Campus an attractive location for research, companies and the creative sector both nationally and internationally.
In 2011, the Hybrid Plattform became an independent project based at the universities themselves, led by two project managers from the two universities: Barbara Stark (TU Berlin, Head of the Research Department) and Prof. Dr. Christoph Gengnagel (UdK Berlin, FG Constructive Design and Structural Design). The content of the Hybrid Platform was conceived by the project leaders and by researchers and lecturers from TU Berlin and UdK Berlin.
As part of a cooperation with the Social Science Research Center Berlin, an accompanying study of the Hybrid Plattform and its projects - led by social scientist Dr. Maria Oppen - was carried out in 2013/2014. The results were fed back into the projects and incorporated into the Hybrid Platform's work program.
In its first phase from April 2011 to June 2015, the platform was supported by the European Regional Development Fund as part of the “Project Future” initiative of the Berlin Senate Department for Economics, Technology and Research. When the Hybrid Lab moved into the Villa Bell in July 2016, a dedicated and neutral venue for the Hybrid Platform was created on the Charlottenburg Campus. As part of the “Germany - Land of Ideas” initiative, the Hybrid Plattform was named one of 100 projects in a nationwide competition in 2016 as an “Outstanding Landmark in the Land of Ideas”.
Since 2015/2016, the Hybrid Plattform has been funded by the participating universities. Until 2021, four project managers represented the two universities in research, teaching and administration: in addition to Barbara Stark and Prof. Dr. Christoph Gengnagel, these are Prof. Dr. Stefan Weinzierl (TU Berlin, Audio Communication Group) and Prof. Kora Kimpel (UdK Berlin, Digital Media Design Fundamentals Group).
Since 2022, the board has expanded to eight members in order to represent the diversity of disciplines at both universities and to strengthen the third mission of transfer to the public.
